High-pressure/high-temperature synthesis of Ln 2CdB5O11(OH) (Ln = Tm, Lu)

Abstract This report presents work on the orthorhombic phases Ln 2CdB5O11(OH) (Ln = Tm, Lu). The title compounds were synthesized in a Walker-type multianvil device at 7 GPa and 650 °C, and the resulting samples were thoroughly investigated through single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction methods. Lu2CdB5O11(OH) crystallizes in the space group Pmna (no. 53) with the unit cell parameters a = 12.772(2), b = 4.6017(7), and c = 12.481(2) Å. Similar unit cell parameters are observed for the isotypic Tm analogue compound. The crystals have a layered crystal structure built up by four-, five-, and eight-membered rings of corner-sharing [BO4] tetrahedra. The structural data are accompanied by attenuated total reflection (ATR) infrared spectra and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX).

Mononuclear Rare-Earth Metalloligands Exploiting a Divergent Ligand.

Rare-earth tris-diketonato [RE(dike)3pyterpy] metalloligands can be prepared reacting at room temperature [RE(dike)3dme] (dme = 1,2-dimethoxyethane; dike = tta with Htta = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone and RE = La, 1; Y, 2; Eu, 3; Dy, 4; or dike = hfac with Hhfac hexafluoroacetylacetone, and RE = Eu, 5; Tb, 6; Yb 7) with 4'-(4‴-pyridil)-2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (pyterpy). The molecular structures of 1, 5, 6, and 7 have been studied through single-crystal X-ray diffraction showing mononuclear neutral complexes with the rare-earth ion in coordination number nine and with a muffin-like coordination geometry. [RE(tta)3pyterpy] promptly reacts with [M(tta)2dme] with formation of [Mpyterpy2][RE(tta)4]2 (M = Zn, RE = Y, 8; M = Co, RE = Dy, 9). Consistently, [Zn(hfac)2dme] reacts at room temperature with 2 equiv of pyterpy yielding [Znpyterpy2][hfac]2 10 that easily can be transformed by reaction with 2 equiv of [Eu(hfac)3] in [Znpyterpy2][Eu(hfac)4]2 11 that has been structurally characterized. Finally, 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 metalloligands react at room temperature in few minutes with [PtCl(μ-Cl)PPh3]2 yielding the heterometallic molecular complexes [RE(dike)3pyterpyPtCl2PPh3] (dike = tta, RE = La, 12; Y, 13; Eu; 14; dike = hfac, RE = Eu, 15; Yb, 16).

Orientation Relationship of the Intergrowth Al13Fe3 and Al13Fe4 Intermetallics Determined by Single-Crystal X-ray Diffraction

In the Al-Fe binary system, the Al13Fe3 phase as well as the Al13Fe4 phase has similar icosahedral building blocks like those appearing in quasicrystals. Therefore, it is of vital importance to clarify the formation process of these two phases. Coexistence of the Al13Fe3 and Al13Fe4 phases was discovered from the educts obtained with a nominal atomic ratio of Al/Fe of 9:2 by high-pressure sintering for the first time. Firstly, single crystal X-ray diffraction (SXRD) combined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) measurement capabilities were adopted to determine the detailed crystal structures of both phases, which were sharply refined with regard to Al13Fe3 and Al13Fe4. Secondly, the orientation relationship between Al13Fe3 and Al13Fe4 was directly deduced from the SXRD datasets and the coexistence structure model was consequently constructed. Finally, seven pairs of parallel atomic planes and their unique orientation relations were determined from the reconstructed reciprocal space precession images. In addition, the real space structure model of the intergrowth crystal along with one kind of interfacial atomic structure were constructed from the determined orientation relations between two phases.

Polymer Supported Nitrogen-Bridged Symmetrical Binuclear Dioxidomolybdenum(VI) Complexes and Their Homogeneous Analogues as Potential Catalysts for Efficient Synthesis of 2-Amino-3-Cyano-4H-Chromenes/Pyrans.

Reaction of 2-chloromethyl-1H-benzimidazole with known intermediates (i-iii), prepared from diaminoguanidine hydrochloride with salicylaldehyde, 5-bromosalicylaldehyde or 3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylaldehyde, in the presence of triethylamine (NEt3) led to the formation of benzimidazole appended new ligands, H4L1-H4L3 (I-III). The homogeneous nitrogen-bridged symmetrical binuclear complexes, [(MoVIO2)2(L1)(H2O)2] (1), [(MoVIO2)2(L2)(H2O)2] (2) and [(MoVIO2)2(L3)(MeOH)2] (3) have been isolated by reacting these ligands with [MoVIO2(acac)2] in a 1 : 2 molar ratio in refluxing methanol. Using 1 : 1 (ligand to Mo precursor) molar ratio under above reaction conditions resulted in the corresponding mononuclear complexes, [MoVIO2(H2L1)(MeOH)] (4), [MoVIO2(H2L2)(H2O)] (5) and [MoVIO2(H2L3)(MeOH)] (6). The binuclear heterogeneous compounds [(MoVIO2)2(L1)(DMF)2]@PS (PS-1), [(MoVIO2)2(L2)(DMF)2]@PS (PS-2) and [(MoVIO2)2(L3)(DMF)2]@PS (PS-3) have been obtained by immobilization of 1-3 onto chloromethylated polystyrene (PS) beads. All synthesized ligands, homogeneous as well as supported compounds have been characterized by elemental analyses and various spectroscopic methods. Single crystal X-ray diffraction study of complexes 1 and 3 confirms their nitrogen-bridged symmetrical binuclear structures while 4 is mononuclear. Heterogeneous compounds (PS-1-PS-3) have further been studied by microwave plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscopy along with energy dispersive spectroscopy. These compounds (homogeneous and heterogeneous) were explored for catalytic applications to one-pot multicomponent reactions (MCRs) for efficient synthesis of biologically active 2-amino-3-cyano-4H-chromenes/pyrans (21 examples). Optimising various reaction parameters helped in achieving as high as 97 % yields of products. Though, only half equivalent of the binuclear complexes (1-3) was required compared to mononuclear analogues (4-6) to achieve comparable yields, heterogeneous catalysts have an added advantage due to their stability and recyclability. Suitable reaction mechanism has also been proposed based on isolated intermediates.

Development of an FeII Complex Exhibiting Intermolecular Proton Shifting Coupled Spin Transition.

In this study, we investigated reversible intermolecular proton shifting (IPS) coupled with spin transition (ST) in a novel FeII complex. The host FeII complex and the guest carboxylic acid anion were connected by intermolecular hydrogen bonds (IHBs). We extended the intramolecular proton transfer coupled ST phenomenon to the intermolecular system. The dynamic phenomenon was confirmed by variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, neutron crystallography, and infrared spectroscopy. The mechanism of IPS was further validated using density functional theory calculations. The discovery of IPS-coupled ST in crystalline molecular materials provides good insights into fundamental processes and promotes the design of novel multifunctional materials with tunable properties for various applications, such as optoelectronics, information storage, and molecular devices.

Ray-tracing analytical absorption correction for X-ray crystallography based on tomographic reconstructions

Processing of single-crystal X-ray diffraction data from area detectors can be separated into two steps. First, raw intensities are obtained by integration of the diffraction images, and then data correction and reduction are performed to determine structure-factor amplitudes and their uncertainties. The second step considers the diffraction geometry, sample illumination, decay, absorption and other effects. While absorption is only a minor effect in standard macromolecular crystallography (MX), it can become the largest source of uncertainty for experiments performed at long wavelengths. Current software packages for MX typically employ empirical models to correct for the effects of absorption, with the corrections determined through the procedure of minimizing the differences in intensities between symmetry-equivalent reflections; these models are well suited to capturing smoothly varying experimental effects. However, for very long wavelengths, empirical methods become an unreliable approach to model strong absorption effects with high fidelity. This problem is particularly acute when data multiplicity is low. This paper presents an analytical absorption correction strategy (implemented in new software AnACor) based on a volumetric model of the sample derived from X-ray tomography. Individual path lengths through the different sample materials for all reflections are determined by a ray-tracing method. Several approaches for absorption corrections (spherical harmonics correction, analytical absorption correction and a combination of the two) are compared for two samples, the membrane protein OmpK36 GD, measured at a wavelength of λ = 3.54 Å, and chlorite dismutase, measured at λ = 4.13 Å. Data set statistics, the peak heights in the anomalous difference Fourier maps and the success of experimental phasing are used to compare the results from the different absorption correction approaches. The strategies using the new analytical absorption correction are shown to be superior to the standard spherical harmonics corrections. While the improvements are modest in the 3.54 Å data, the analytical absorption correction outperforms spherical harmonics in the longer-wavelength data (λ = 4.13 Å), which is also reflected in the reduced amount of data being required for successful experimental phasing.

Lanthanide complexes with an azo-dye chromophore ligand: syntheses, crystal structures, and near-infrared luminescence by long-wavelength excitation.

Near-infrared (NIR) emissive probes are becoming increasingly popular in biological sensing and imaging due to the advantages of non-invasiveness and deep tissue-penetrating ability. Herein, a series of complexes of trivalent lanthanide ions (Ln = Yb, Er, and Gd) with the commercially available azo dye chromophore 2R (Na2H2C2R) as ligand and featuring respectively H2O and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) as ancillary ligands have been prepared. Formulated as [Ln2(HC2R)2(H2O)10]·8H2O (1-3, Ln = Yb, Er, Gd) and [Ln2(HC2R)2(DMSO)10]·2DMSO (4-6, Ln = Yb, Er, Gd), their structures have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Photophysical property studies revealed NIR emissions of the DMSO complexes characteristic of Yb(III) and Er(III), effectively sensitized by the dye ligand arising mainly from the π-π* transition of the chromophore. The long-wavelength excitation of the complexes, covering the whole visible-light range and extending into the NIR region, portends the potential applications of such complexes for flexible bioimaging and sensing.

Elucidating the Binding Mode of Sulfur- and Selenium-Based Cationic Chalcogen-Bond Donors.

For a comparison of the interaction modes of various chalcogen-bond donors, 2-chalcogeno-imidazolium salts have been designed, synthesized, and studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction, solution NMR and DFT as well as for their ability to act as activators in an SN1-type substitution reaction. Their interaction modes in solution were elucidated based on NMR diffusion and chemical shift perturbation experiments, which were supported by DFT-calculations. Our finding is that going from lighter to the heavier chalcogens, hydrogen bonding plays a less, while chalcogen bonding an increasingly important role for the coordination of anions. Anion-π interactions also show importance, especially for the sulfur and selenium derivatives.

Anti-Inflammatory Salicin Derivatives from the Barks of Salix tetrasperma.

The genus Salix L. is traditionally used in folk medicine to alleviate pain caused by various kinds of inflammation. In the present study, 10 undescribed salicin derivatives along with 5 known congeners were isolated from the barks of Salix tetrasperma, and their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analyses, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculations, and chemical conversions. Compounds 4-6 significantly inhibited NO production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages, and the most active 4 obviously suppressed the production of IL-1β and IL-6 and decreased iNOS and COX-2 expression in a dose-dependent manner. Further Western blotting analysis revealed that the anti-inflammatory mechanism of 4 is possibly mediated through the MAPK and NF-κB signaling pathways.

Structural Characterization and Bioactivity of a Titanium(IV)-Oxo Complex Stabilized by Mandelate Ligands

Research on titanium-oxo complexes (TOCs) is usually focused on their structure and photocatalytic properties. Findings from these investigations further sparked our interest in exploring their potential biological activities. In this study, we focused on the synthesis and structure of a compound with the general formula [Ti8O2(OiPr)20(man)4] (1), which was isolated from the reaction mixture of titanium(IV) isopropoxide with mandelic acid (Hman) in a molar ratio of 4:1. The structure (1) was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, while spectroscopic studies provided insights into its physicochemical properties. To assess the potential practical applications of (1), its microcrystals were incorporated into a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) matrix, yielding composite materials of the type PMMA + (1) (2 wt.%, 5 wt.%, 10 wt.%, and 20 wt.%). The next stage of our research involved the evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of the obtained materials. The investigations performed demonstrated the antimicrobial activity of pure (1) and its composites (PMMA + (1)) against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains. Furthermore, MTT tests conducted on the L929 murine fibroblast cell line confirmed the lack of cytotoxicity of these composites. Our study identified (1) as a promising antimicrobial agent, which is also may be use for producing composite coatings.

M-Ge-Si thermolytic molecular precursors and models for germanium-doped transition metal sites on silica.

The synthesis, thermolysis, and surface organometallic chemistry of thermolytic molecular precursors based on a new germanosilicate ligand platform, -OGe[OSi(OtBu)3]3, is described. Use of this ligand is demonstrated with preparation of complexes containing the first-row transition metals Cr, Mn, and Fe. The thermolysis and grafting behavior of the synthesized complexes, Fe{OGe[OSi(OtBu)3]3}2 (FeGe), Mn{OGe[OSi(OtBu)3]3}2(THF)2 (MnGe) and Cr{OGe[OSi(OtBu)3]3}2(THF)2 (CrGe), was evaluated using a combination of thermogravimetric analysis; nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies; and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD). Grafting of the precursors onto SBA-15 mesoporous silica and subsequent calcination in air led to substantial changes in transition metal coordination environments and oxidation states, the implications of which are discussed in the context of low-coordinate and low oxidation state thermolytic molecular precursors.

Popping and Locking: Balanced Rigidity and Porosity of Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks for High-Productivity Methane Purification.

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) hold great promise in carbon capture, owing to their structural designability and functional porosity. However, intrinsic linker dynamics limit their pressure-swing adsorption application to biogas upgrading and methane purification. Recently, a functionality-locking strategy has shown feasibility in suppressing such dynamics. Still, a trade-off between structural rigidity and uptake capacity remains a key challenge for optimizing their high-pressure CO2/CH4 separation performance. Here, we report a sequential structural locking (SSL) strategy for enhancing the CO2 capture capacity and CH4 purification productivity in dynamic ZIFs (dynaZIFs). Specifically, we isolated multiple functionality-locked phases, ZIF-78-lt, -ht1, and -ht2, by activation at 50, 160, and 210 °C, respectively. We observed multiple-level locking through gas adsorption and powder X-ray diffraction. We uncovered an SSL mechanism dominated by linker-linker π-π interactions that transit to C-H···O hydrogen bonds with binding energies increasing from -0.64 to -2.77 and -5.72 kcal mol-1, respectively, as evidenced by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and density functional theory calculations. Among them, ZIF-78-ht1 exhibits the highest CO2 capture capacity (up to 18.6 mmol g-1) and CH4 purification productivity (up to 7.6 mmol g-1) at 298 K and 30 bar. These findings provide molecular and energetic insights into leveraging framework flexibility through the SSL mechanism to optimize porous materials' separation performance.

Halogen-Decorated Metal-Organic Frameworks for Efficient and Selective CO2 Capture, Separation, and Chemical Fixation with Epoxides under Mild Conditions.

In the present work, three novel halogen-appended cadmium(II) metal-organic frameworks [Cd2(L1)2(4,4'-Bipy)2]n·4n(DMF) (1), [Cd2(L2)2(4,4'-Bipy)2]n·3n(DMF) (2), and [Cd(L3)(4,4'-Bipy)]n·2n(DMF) (3) [where L1 = 5-{(4-bromobenzyl)amino}isophthalate; L2 = 5-{(4-chlorobenzyl)amino}isophthalate; L3 = 5-{(4-fluorobenzyl)amino}isophthalate; 4,4'-Bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine; and DMF = N,N'-dimethylformamide] have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions and characterized by various analytical techniques. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrated that all the MOFs feature a similar type of three-dimensional structure having a binuclear [Cd2(COO)4(N)4] secondary building block unit. Moreover, MOFs 1 and 2 contain one-dimensional channels along the b-axis, whereas MOF 3 possesses a 1D channel along the a-axis. In these MOFs, the pores are decorated with multifunctional groups, i.e., halogen and amine. The gas adsorption analysis of these MOFs demonstrate that they display high uptake of CO2 (up to 5.34 mmol/g) over N2 and CH4. The isosteric heat of adsorption (Qst) value for CO2 at zero loadings is in the range of 18-26 kJ mol-1. In order to understand the mechanism behind the better adsorption of CO2 by our MOFs, we have also performed configurational bias Monte Carlo simulation studies, which confirm that the interaction between our MOFs and CO2 is stronger compared to those with N2 and CH4. Various noncovalent interactions, e.g., halogen (X)···O, Cd···O, and O···O, between CO2 and the halogen atom, the Cd(II) metal center, and the carboxylate group from the MOFs are observed, respectively, which may be a reason for the higher carbon dioxide adsorption. Ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) calculations of MOF 1 demonstrate that the obtained selectivity values for CO2/CH4 (50:50) and CO2/N2 (15:85) are ca. 28 and 193 at 273 K, respectively. However, upon increasing the temperature to 298 K, the selectivity value (S = 34) decreases significantly for the CO2/N2 mixture. We have also calculated the breakthrough analysis curves for all the MOFs using mixtures of CO2/CH4 (50:50) and CO2/N2 (50:50 and 15:85) at different entering gas velocities and observed larger retention times for CO2 in comparison with other gases, which also signifies the stronger interaction between our MOFs and CO2. Moreover, due to the presence of Lewis acidic metal centers, these MOFs act as heterogeneous catalysts for the CO2 fixation reactions with different epoxides in the presence of tetrabutyl ammonium bromide (TBAB), for conversion into industrially valuable cyclic carbonates. These MOFs exhibit a high conversion (96-99%) of epichlorohydrin (ECH) to the corresponding cyclic carbonate 4-(chloromethyl)-1,3-dioxolan-2-one after 12 h of reaction time at 1 bar of CO2 pressure, at 65 °C. The MOFs can be reused up to four cycles without compromising their structural integrity as well as without losing their activity significantly.

A Novel Cocrystal of Daidzein with Piperazine to Optimize the Solubility, Permeability and Bioavailability of Daidzein

It is well known that daidzein has various significant medicinal values and health benefits, such as anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, cholesterol lowering, neuroprotective, cardioprotective and so on. To our disappointment, poor solubility, low permeability and inferior bioavailability seriously limit its clinical application and market development. To optimize the solubility, permeability and bioavailability of daidzein, the cocrystal of daidzein and piperazine was prepared through a scientific and reasonable design, which was thoroughly characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. Combining single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis with theoretical calculation, detailed structural information on the cocrystal was clarified and validated. In addition, a series of evaluations on the pharmacogenetic properties of the cocrystal were investigated. The results indicated that the cocrystal of daidzein and piperazine possessed the favorable stability, increased solubility, improved permeability and optimized bioavailability of daidzein. Compared with the parent drug, the formation of cocrystal, respectively, resulted in 3.9-, 3.1-, 4.9- and 60.8-fold enhancement in the solubility in four different media, 4.8-fold elevation in the permeability and 3.2-fold in the bioavailability of daidzein. Targeting the pharmaceutical defects of daidzein, the surprising elevation in the solubility, permeability and bioavailability of daidzein was realized by a clever cocrystal strategy, which not only devoted assistance to the market development and clinical application of daidzein but also paved a new path to address the drug-forming defects of insoluble drugs.

Enhancing the Analysis of Eu3+ Photoluminescence in Coordination Compounds in the Solid State by Determining their Refractive Index

This study is focused on determining the refractive index as a crucial parameter for evaluating the intrinsic quantum yield and the ligand sensitisation efficiency in solid‐state trivalent lanthanide coordination compounds. For this, eight trivalent europium complexes with phenyl‐terpyridine ([EuX3(ptpy)(L)], X = Cl– or NO3–, ptpy = 4'‑phenyl‑2,2':6',2''‑terpyridine, L = H2O or other molecules) were examined. Their refractive indices were determined using the Becke lines test by immersing transparent material in a series of media with known refractive indices. Using the set of media presented here, determining crystalline materials' refractive indices from 1.41 to 1.73 with a step of 0.01 is possible. Assessment of the refractive indices of the complexes mentioned above allowed a comprehensive analysis of their photophysical properties in the solid state. Moreover, this method can be extrapolated for other solid‐state materials, offering valuable insights in the broader field of photophysics. In addition to photoluminescence investigations, the compounds presented were characterised by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction (SCXRD), powder X‐ray diffraction (PXRD), Hirschfeld surface area analysis, UV‑Vis reflectance spectroscopy, hydrolysis sensitivity analysis, and simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis coupled with mass‐spectrometry (STA‐MS).

Synthesis and Antifungal Properties of 1,2,4-Triazole Schiff Base Agents Based on a 3D-QSAR Model.

Based on our previous research, a 3D-QSAR model (q2=0.51, ONC=5, r2=0.982, F=271.887, SEE=0.052) was established to predict the inhibitory effects of triazole Schiff base compounds on Fusarium graminearum, and its predictive ability was also confirmed through the statistical parameters. According to the results of the model design, 30 compounds with superior bioactivity compared to the template molecule 4 were obtained. Seven of these compounds (DES2-6, DES9-10) with improved biological activity and readily available raw materials were successfully synthesized. Their structures were confirmed through HRMS, NMR, and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis (DES-5). The bioactivity of the final products was investigated through an in vitro antifungal assay. There was little difference in the EC50 values between the experimental and predicted values of the model, demonstrating the reliability of the model. Especially, DES-3 (EC50=9.915 mg/L) and DES-5 (EC50=9.384 mg/L) exhibited better inhibitory effects on Fusarium graminearum compared to the standard drug (SD) triadimenol (EC50=10.820 mg/L). These compounds could serve as potential new fungicides for future research. The interaction between the final products and isocitrate lyase (ICL) was investigated through molecular docking. Compounds with R groups that have a higher electron-donating capacity were found to be biologically active.

Synthesis of substituted terpyridine nickel nitrate complexes and their inhibitory selectivity against cancer cell lines

Six terpyridine‑nickel complexes 1–6 were formed by the coordination of 4′-(4-R-phenyl)-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine (R = hydroxyl (L1), methoxyl (L2), methylsulfonyl (L3), fluoro (L4), bromo (L5), iodo (L6)) derivatives to nickel nitrate. The compositions and structures of these complexes were analyzed by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), elemental analyses, electrospray ionization mass spectra (ESI-MS), solid-state ultraviolet-visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy, and single crystal X-ray diffraction (1, 2 and 4) studies. In vitro anticancer cell proliferation experiments against SiHa (human cervical squamous cancer cell line) cells, Bel-7402 (human hepatoma cancer cell line), Eca-109 (human esophageal cancer cell line) and HL-7702 (human normal hepatocyte cell line) indicate that they have more excellent anti-proliferation effects than the cis-platin against Siha cells, Bel-7402 cells and Eca-109 cells. Especially, complex 5 showed a rather outstanding inhibitory effect against the SiHa cell line and was less toxic than the other compounds to the HL-7702 cell line, implying an obvious specific inhibitory effect. Therefore, complex 5 has the potential value to be developed as an anticancer cell-specific drug against human cervical squamous carcinoma. Molecular docking simulation, UV–vis absorption spectroscopy and circular dichroism experiments show that they prefer to bind to DNA part in an embedded binding manner.

Supramolecular Solid Complexes between Bis-pyridinium-4-oxime and Distinctive Cyanoiron Platforms

The structural features and optical properties of supramolecular cyanoiron salts containing bis-pyridinium-4-oxime Toxogonin® (TOXO) as an electron acceptor are presented. The properties of the new TOXO-based cyanoiron materials were probed by employing two cyanoiron platforms: hexacyanoferrate(II), [Fe(CN)6]4– (HCF); and nitroprusside, [Fe(CN)5(NO)]2– (NP). Two water-insoluble inter-ionic donor–acceptor phases were characterized: the as-prepared microcrystalline reddish-brown (TOXO)2[Fe(CN)6]·8H2O (1a) with a medium-responsive, hydrochromic character; and the dark violet crystalline (TOXO)2[Fe(CN)6]·3.5H2O (1cr). Complex 1a, upon external stimulation, transforms to the violet anhydrous phase (TOXO)2[Fe(CN)6] (1b), which upon water uptake transforms back to 1a. Using the NP platform resulted in the water-insoluble crystalline salt TOXO[Fe(CN)5(NO)]·2H2O (2). The structures of 1cr and 2, solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, along with a comparative spectroscopic (UV–vis–NIR diffuse reflectance, IR, solid-state MAS-NMR, Mössbauer), thermal, powder X-ray diffraction, and microscopic analysis (SEM, TEM) of the isolated materials, provided insight for the supramolecular binding, electron-accepting, and H-bonding capabilities of TOXO in the self-assembly of these functionalized materials.

Dithiocarbonate-Protected Au25 Nanorods of a Chiral D5 Configuration and NIR-II Phosphorescence.

Innovative surface-protecting ligands are in constant demand due to their crucial role in shaping the configuration, property, and application of gold nanoclusters. Here, the unprecedented O-ethyl dithiocarbonate (DTX)-stabilized atomically precise gold nanoclusters, [Au25(PPh3)10(DTX)5Cl2]2+ (Au25DTX-Cl) and [Au25(PPh3)10(DTX)5Br2]2+ (Au25DTX-Br), were synthesized and structurally characterized. The introduction of bidentate DTX ligands not only endowed the gold nanocluster with unique staggered Au25 nanorod configurations but also generated the symmetry breaking from the D5d geometry of the Au25 kernels to the chiral D5 configuration of the Au25 molecules. The chirality of Au25 nanorods was notably revealed through single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and chiral separation was induced by employing chiral DTX ligands. The staggered configurations of Au25 nanorods, as opposed to eclipsed ones, were responsible for the large red shift in the emission wavelengths, giving rise to a promising near-infrared II (NIR-II, >1000 nm) phosphorescence. Furthermore, their performances in photocatalytic sulfide oxidation and electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reactions have been examined, and it has been demonstrated that the outstanding catalytic activity of gold nanoclusters is highly related to their stability.

A novel polycyclic quinazoline and three quinolines alkaloids from marine-derived fungus trichoderma longibrachiatum QD01 with anti-bacterial and anti-quorum sensing activities

A novel polycyclic quinazoline alkaloid (1) along with one new natural quinoline alkaloid (2) and two known quinoline alkaloids (3,4) were isolated from the marine-derived fungus Trichoderma longibrachiatum QD01. Structural determinations of those isolates were established by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses and literature comparison. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of novel compound verified its structure and stereochemistry, representing the first characterised crystal structure of a trimeric-type of tetrahydroquinazoline. Compound 4 exhibited potential antibacterial and anti-quorum sensing activity against C. violaceum and C. violaceum CV026. The sub-MIC of 4 observably decreased the violacein production in C. violaceum CV026 by 55% on 15 μg/mL. Furthermore, molecular docking results revealed that 4 has stronger binding interactions with CviR receptor than ligand C6-HSL with lower binding energy of −8.68 kcal/mol. Hydrogen bond and π–π interactions formed by Trp84, Tyr88, Trp111, and Phe126 were predicted to play an important role in the inhibition against C. violaceum CV026.
